Abi Hopkins – Counsellor and Therapist
About Me
My name is Abi (she/her) and I am a BACP registered counsellor who works with adults and young people of all backgrounds, cultures, genders and sexualities.
I have over 20 years’ experience of working with people therapeutically in a variety of community and educational settings. I currently work as a counsellor in a secondary school, and in private practice I work online and in-person at Space To Be You in Hackney.
You may be considering coming to therapy because you are feeling lost, depressed, confused, lonely, anxious, stuck or unsettled. These feelings can be painful and overwhelming, but you do not have to go through it alone.
In therapy I offer a healing relationship that is safe, caring and free from judgment, so you can feel accepted, valued and deeply understood. This can lead to a sense of inner peace and self-acceptance as well as better relationships with yourself and others.
Training and Experience
My core training is in Person-Centred Therapy. This means I am trained to provide the conditions which enable you to grow and become closer to your authentic self. I believe that you have within you the capacity for positive growth, whatever this looks like for you. Our work together is to help you to reconnect with your needs and values and develop a deeper understanding of yourself through self awareness and self compassion.
I am also trained in Solution-Focussed Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy which I integrate into my practice depending on the needs and preferences of my clients. These approaches provide valuable tools and strategies which help to build and strengthen personal resources and coping strategies, and move towards personally meaningful goals and a more fulfilling life.
I have further training in relationship counselling and draw from several effective approaches to support couples to develop deeper understanding and empathy for each other, improve communication and change unhelpful patterns. My background in the area of restorative approaches, conflict resolution and mediation have provided a useful foundation for this work.
I am specialised in helping people with issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, loneliness, depression, emotional dysregulation, relationship issues, trauma and shame. I also have extensive experience in working with neurodivergent clients such as those with and without a diagnosis of ASD and/or ADHD.
I am a fully supervised member of BACP and I adhere to the BACP ethical framework for the counselling professions in all aspects of my work.
