Maria Boghiu – Counsellor and Psychotherapist
About me
My first career was in writing software. My second career was in startups, specifically being on the founding team of a mental health startup that I’m happy to report is still working with over 500 companies to give people free access to therapy as a work benefit.
I’ve been working in the mental health space for almost 7 years and I’ve been in clinical practice for almost 5 years. My approach to therapy is existential, meaning that I draw on philosophy as much as I draw on scientific philosophy.
About my practice
Therapy is about having a safe, confidential, neutral space where you can make sense of what you’re thinking and feeling, what you need and what your goals are, what is important and what you can let go of.
I’ll ask clarifying questions, so that the more you help me understand you, the better you come to understand yourself. I can offer relevant insights from existential philosophy and scientific psychology, as well as my own perspective. Now and then, I might suggest something to read in your own time. We’d usually explore questions of meaning and possibility and talk about different ways of being in the world. We don’t have to talk about childhood unless it’s relevant. (It often is.) In general, I agree with the sentiment that happiness is telling a better story from the same set of facts, an act of creative imagination.
I have extensive experience working with:
- self-acceptance: low self-confidence, shame, impostor syndrome
- accepting what happened or will happen
- finding forgiveness and other ways to move on
- managing chronic conditions (especially anxiety, ADHD)
- coping with grief & bereavement
- accepting the loss of a relationship: breaking up, falling out
- coping with change: moving, changing jobs, unemployment
- coping with major life events: parenthood, retirement, illness
- coping with the various challenges in building good relationships with ourselves and others
